UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, and 4DMedical recently announced the creation of the Functional Lung Imaging Research Program in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Miller School. 4DMedical is an Australian medical technology company and the developer of XV Technology, a four-dimensional lung imaging technology.

The Functional Lung Imaging Research Program, 4DMedical’s first research program in a U.S. health system, will use its breakthrough imaging technology to improve treatment outcomes for patients with chronic lung diseases. It will define the physiological impact of numerous lung-related conditions such as emphysema, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, and lung cancer on respiratory function to improve diagnostic approaches and management strategies for patients.
 
“We look forward to using this new imaging development,” said Naresh M. Punjabi, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Miller School of Medicine. “The fully functional lung imaging capability provided by 4DMedical will be used to achieve deeper insights into disease pathophysiology and help pave the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.”



The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Cory Price as the new director of the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center.

Price has served as the Interim Director at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center since January 2020. He previously served as the Associate Director for the Orlando VA Medical Center as well as the Assistant Director for the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. He began his federal government career more than 15 years ago as a commissioned Medical Service Corps Officer in the U.S. Army, where he oversaw helicopter ambulance employment and operations for nearly 12 years.
 
Price has an undergraduate degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he majored in Aeronautical Science and obtained his Commercial Pilot certification. His graduate degree is in Healthcare Administration from Webster University. Price holds a graduate degree in Healthcare Administration from Webster University and he is also Board Certified in Healthcare Management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).



Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center now offers the WATCHMAN FLX™ for patients who have a high risk of stroke with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) who need an alternative to oral anticoagulation therapy by permanently closing off the left atrial appendage-the area of the heart where stroke-causing blood clots commonly form in NAVF.

This technology features a new, fully rounded design offering physicians the ability to safely enter, and maneuver within the left atrial appendage. It is the first LAAC device that can be fully recaptured, repositioned and redeployed for precise placement, and the new frame design allows for optimal device engagement with the tissue for long-term stability and a faster, more complete seal.

In stroke diagnosis, the system’s more advanced imaging saves time, helps physicians visualize collateral vessels and supports sounder treatment decisions before performing life-saving procedures. The system is also a key tool for brain aneurysm treatment and other conditions that require intricate device placement and excellent image quality.
 
The Corindus CorPath GRX Robotic System, meanwhile, allows physicians to perform incredibly complex vascular procedures, enabling millimeter by millimeter movement through a patient’s arteries in minimally invasive procedures. Seated in a radiation-protected cockpit, physicians use joystick controls to robotically advance catheters, balloons and stents to clear blockages and restore blood flow.
