Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in Palm Beach County to offer patients The HeartLight X3 System for cardiac ablations. This procedure offers some of the most advanced treatments for patients with atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder. Interventional cardiologist Dr. Mark Freher is the first surgeon to perform the procedure in our area using the system’s miniaturized camera and advanced laser technology.

Developed by CardioFocus Inc., the HeartLight X3 Endoscopic Ablation System is designed for physicians to perform pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) procedures with accuracy, precision, and confidence. The PVI procedure creates areas of scar tissue around the pulmonary veins to block the electrical signals that cause arrhythmia. While older treatments rely on x-ray or mapping support for guidance, the X3 System’s innovative HeartLight catheter is equipped with a miniature video camera and “headlight” to deliver a direct, live-action view of the inside of the heart. The system also enables the physician to customize the amount of laser energy used during the procedure based upon the patient’s specific needs, and HeartLight’s unique balloon design adapts to the heart’s specific anatomy.



Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital welcomes board-certified cardiac surgeon Mariano Brizzio, M.D. Dr. Brizzio earned his doctorate of medicine from Universidad de Buenos Aires and his doctorate of philosophy from Universidad del Salvador in Argentina. He completed residencies in general surgery and cardiac and vascular surgery at Complejo Medico Churruca-Visca and Instituto Sacre-Coeur, respectively. He completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Cleveland Clinic.

Prior to joining Indian River Hospital, Dr. Brizzio has served as an attending cardiac surgeon at The Valley-Columbia Heart Center in New Jersey and Clinical Assistant professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine in New York. He is an Associate Fellow in the American College of Cardiology and a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, among other organizations.



The medical staff at Broward Health Medical Center awarded $10,000 in scholarships to local high school students who will be continuing their education in the medical field. Ten high school graduates from Dillard High School, Fort Lauderdale High School and Stranahan High School each received a $1,000 scholarship at a drive-through, no contact ceremony at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. Students were awarded their scholarship check and received a gift bag with a special message of encouragement from Broward Health physicians. 




Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital welcomes board-certified internal medicine physician Richard J. Wyderski, M.D., MMM, FACP.

Dr. Wyderski earned his doctorate of medicine from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and his Master of Medical Management degree from University of Southern California. He completed his residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
 
Prior to joining Indian River Hospital, Dr. Wyderski was the Medical Director of the Acute Care for Elders Unit at Wake Forest Baptist Davie Medical Center in North Carolina.
 
Dr. Wyderski has taught and mentored US and international residents and students throughout his career, including as a member of the Affiliate Faculty for the Wake Forest School of Medicine Office of Global Health.He has also volunteered and has served as an officer for a number of community and professional organizations including the Dayton and Winston-Salem Units of the NAACP, Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio, Ohio and North Carolina Medical Societies, and founded the Domestic Abuse and Violence Institute of Dayton.



Targeted MRI/Ultrasound Fusion biopsies are one of the latest technologies available in the detection and management of prostate cancer. Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is proud to offer this new standard of care.

Historically, finding the exact location of cancer in a prostate gland has been a challenge. Conventional TRUS prostate biopsy techniques are referred to as “blind” biopsies since physicians typically cannot easily view the specific location of any abnormal tissue. Now, using the Artemis 3D imaging and navigation system, physicians are able to better identify and more accurately biopsy suspicious prostate cancer areas.
 
The MRI/Ultrasound Fusion (or MR/US Fusion) targeted biopsy procedure starts by using pre-exam MRI prostate images. These images are then fused with real-time ultrasound images to create a detailed 3D high-definition map of the prostate. This allows the physician to accurately target any visible lesions during the biopsy.
 
Patients recommended for this procedure are men who, typically, have elevated and/or rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels or those with a clinical concern for prostate cancer.
