Westside Regional Medical Center’s stroke program has earned The Joint Commission’s Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Certification. This certification validates the hospital meets rigorous standards when performing mechanical thrombectomy procedures, a procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain during an ischemic stroke. 

“Our physicians and staff are dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, every day,” said Barbara Simmons, R.N., CEO of Westside Regional Medical Center. “Timely stroke care is essential, and our team is prepared to deliver life-saving treatment at a moment’s notice.”


The Broward Health Foundation recently presented a check for more than $28,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Dorian relief efforts. The donation is part of Broward Health’s continued commitment to support its neighbors in the Bahamas islands most-affected by the storm.

In the days following the September hurricane, Broward Health leadership, employees and caregivers rallied to help. Broward Health President and CEO Gino Santorio led efforts to send much-needed supplies on an air ambulance, and the Foundation established an Employee Giving Campaign. Collectively, the Broward Health team raised $28,134 to support the ongoing efforts of the American Red Cross.
 
“This was a tremendous show of support by Broward Health employees and caregivers, as well as our community, who donated their time and monetary gifts for those in need,” said David Clark, Senior Vice President of Operations.
 
The check was presented at the North Broward Hospital District board meeting as Broward Health leaders detailed the significant efforts made by the American Red Cross to help evacuees settle locally, as well highlighted their continued on-the-ground support in the Bahamas and initial emergency response to the humanitarian crisis.
 
On hand for the check presentation were Foundation representatives Lisa Davis, Amy Miller, and Wendy Erdmann, as well as North Broward Hospital District Chair Ray Berry, Vice Chair Nancy Gregoire, and Commissioners Stacy Angier, Christopher Ure, and Marie Waugh, and Santorio, Alan Goldsmith, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, and Alex Fernandez, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. American Red Cross of Broward’s Chair Cindy Imperato, board member Liz Caldwell, and Regional Philanthropy Officer Kevin Moran accepted the donation.

Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Martin Health, recently received the National Presidents’ Circle Award.

This hospital was one of only 17 hospitals in Encompass Health’s nationwide network of 133 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals to receive the National Presidents’ Circle Award. This distinction recognizes the hospital’s outstanding performance in development of clinical programs, quality of patient care services, employee retention and overall operational excellence. In addition, Encompass Health at Martin Health was one of eight hospitals awarded with Outstanding Performance in Patient Satisfaction.


Christina Madera says she was using heroin and cocaine for 20 years before medication-assisted treatment set her on the road to recovery.The self-employed 35-year old from Delray Beach says thanks to her commitment to therapy, she has been sober for six months.Madera is the first patient at the C. L. Brumback Primary Care Clinics’ newest location, which serves patients with substance use disorders. The medical office officially opened its doors October 21 on the JFK Medical Center North Campus in Mangonia Park.

For the past two years, patients suffering from substance use disorders have been receiving medical treatment (including medication-assisted treatment), psychiatric care, behavioral health counseling and primary care services at the Brumback Clinics’ Lantana site.Psychiatrist Courtney Rowling, M.D., who is the Director of Behavioral Health for the Brumback Clinics, says the new site is larger with four exam rooms and will build on a successful outpatient model of care.
 
“We now have more community partnerships to help meet the need in our county for compassionate, integrated treatment for new patients with substance use disorders,” said Dr. Rowling.“Our goal is to help treat the whole patient and stop the cycle of repeat overdoses.”
 
Dr. Rowling says she is proud to be a part of a caring team of psychiatrists, primary care physicians, counselors specialized in treating addiction and other licensed professionals.Services include medication-assisted treatment (Buprenorphine, Naltrexone and Vivitrol), individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, individualized care coordination, pharmacy services and links to other health and social service resources.
 
“Our new site is ready to provide evidence-based care to patients at different stages of treatment, even if they are not sure that they are ready,” said Belma Andrić, M.D., MPH, Chief Medical Officer, VP and Executive Director of Clinical Services for the Health Care District. “Patients with substance use disorders, including opioid and alcohol addiction, are treated to a one-stop-shop approach to meet their health care needs in one setting. We hope they choose to make the Brumback Clinics their medical home.”
