Two North Shore Medical Center officials have been named finalists for the South Florida Business Journal’s “2007 Excellence in Health Care Awards.”

North Shore CEO Manny Linares is a finalist in the “Best Health Care CEO of the Year” category and Jamie Lozano, M.D., is finalist for “Physician of the Year.”

Since being appointed CEO approximately two years ago, Linares has directed that more than $20 million be used to purchase new equipment and upgrade existing services in the 357-bed facility.

Dr. Lozano serves as medical director of North Shore’s C. Gordon Griffith Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition to this recent honor, earlier this year he was named the hospital’s “2007 Physician of the Year” for his efforts to inspire his colleagues, treat his patients with the highest level of care and develop a program with the hospital’s Cancer Committee to provide free monthly screenings to area residents to identify more cancers in their early stages.


Give Kids a Smile Miami, an event designed to provide free preventive and restorative dental care to children of low income families, was held in various locations in Miami recently. Volunteer dentists, dental assistants and hygienists provided dental screenings, cleanings and more to children from neighborhood organizations and schools in Miami-Dade County. Parents and their children also learned about the growing scientific evidence that oral health is critical to staying healthy.

The Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, an initiative of the Miami-Dade County Health Department, sponsored the event. The Health Foundation of South Florida provided funding for the event.
