February 9, 2023 – Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, part of the Ellen Leifer Shulman and Steven Shulman Digestive Disease Center, has established The Center for Human Nutrition, which provides nutritional evaluation, education and treatment to patients experiencing nutritional deficiencies due to underlying disease.

A multidisciplinary team of specialists, including physicians, registered dieticians, dietetic technicians, and nurses, provide nutritional services for patients with a range of gastrointestinal conditions, such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorptive disorders, short bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal motility disorders, digestive fistulas,  swallowing disorders, neurological conditions and cancer. The team has expertise in the management of post bariatric surgery patients, complex patients with cirrhosis, Crohn’s disease, ostomy, and patients who have had solid organ transplantation. They provide comprehensive nutritional care for patients with highly specialized needs both in the hospital and outpatient setting.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to provide another level of service to patients who have complex nutrition needs as a result of illnesses that are often life-threatening,” said Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, MBA, President of Cleveland Clinic’s Weston Hosptial. “Many of these patients need nutritional support to recover from their disease. We have an incredible team of specialists who are here to help improve our patient’s quality of life.”

Skilled dietitians and clinicians also offer outpatient video visits if patients cannot be seen in-person.  The home nutrition support team manages the nutrition needs of patients by using parenteral or enteral nutrition and monitors their nutritional status. Their goal is to achieve optimal nutrition by treating nutritional deficiencies, promoting healing, and minimizing malnutrition related complications.

The Center for Human Nutrition is another significant achievement for the Weston Hospital’s Gastroenterology and GI Surgery program, which has ranked among the best in the nation by US News and World Report and has achieved national recognition for seven consecutive years.

The Weston team works collaboratively with the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition in Cleveland, Ohio, to provide integrated care and guide patients through each step of their medical journey.
