Why do organizations succeed? They’re a few reasons why they do; a major reason organizations succeed is by investing in their employees. Investing comes in many forms. One of those forms in which successful organizations invest in their personnel is by creating a culture of coaching and mentoring. Coaching and mentoring are proven methods that help organizations reach high levels of productivity, employee retention and customer satisfaction. Successful organizations have discovered that when they invest in their people, it is one of the most important ways to create and sustain success for years to come.
 
West Palm Beach VA Medical Center (WPB VAMC) is continuously pursuing excellence in health care by caring for our nations Veterans and by cultivating a culture of coaching and mentoring. At the medical center, Rafael Rodriquez Jr., CME Coordinator, and Rojean Williams, Program Specialist, have been teaching the principles of coaching and mentoring as part of the VA professional development and employee retention strategy. Coaching and mentoring has been a cornerstone of higher employee satisfaction and professional development. The coaching and mentoring program is sustained by the support of the Medical Center’s leadership as well as the support and guidance of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) National Education Office. The VHA Core Mentor Training Course, Coaching Toward High Performance, is a 8-hour training course consisting of several accelerated learning methodologies, utilizing coaching and mentoring strategies. Everyone who meets course requirements are equipped to achieve a high level of skills and knowledge in order to effectively coach and or mentor someone within the organization.
 
The VHA Core Mentor Training Course’s purpose is to equip supervisors, team leaders, individual and team coaches, nike pas cher and other staff in the knowledge and skills of coaching and mentoring others. Course participants learn about similarities and differences of Coaching and Mentoring, Team Coaching, The International Coaching Federation (ICF) coaching competencies, the ICF Standards of Ethical Conduct, the G.R.O.W. model, and Edible Feedback.
 
The ICF competencies and the Standards of Ethical Conduct serve as a base line for those practicing the art of coaching and mentoring. The 11 core coaching competencies were developed to support greater understanding about the skills and approaches used within today’s coaching practice as defined by the ICF.
 
The GROW Model is the cornerstone of the coaching/mentoring relationship, a behavioral-based approach framework for the coaching and mentoring conversation. It is mainly a vehicle to help with goal setting and problem solving. It is divided into four sections; 1. Goals, (Current) Reality, Options and What’s next/Way Forward. Although no one person can be clearly identified as the originator, Graham Alexander, Alan Fine and Sir John Whitmore all made significant contributions. The GROW model conversation begins with an exploration of the client’s goals. The coach/mentor helps the client become aware of the current reality and helps the client explore options. Finally, the coach/mentor and coachee/mentee explore “what’s next.” In this phase, the client and coach develop an action plan with goals that meet the criteria for SMARTer goals.
 
West Palm Beach VA Medical Center currently has trained 80 coaches/mentors since 2005 and has accumulated a total of 2,130 coaching hours provided to VA staff. Thirteen coaches have achieved resident certification and twenty-two coaches have earned fellow certification – 50 plus hours of coaching, which meets national certification standards.
