MIAMI, FL – April 17, 2024 – The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) and Florida International University (FIU) on behalf of its Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, signed an agreement to allow medical students and residents from FIU to become members of DCMA during their time as medical students and residents.

The agreement is aimed at enhancing the educational and professional journey of medical students and residents in Miami-Dade County and connecting these future physicians from FIU with the health care community at large.

The DCMA, a professional organization that provides opportunities for medical education, networking, and advocacy in the medical field, is glad to extend its membership privileges to FIU medical students and residents.

Under the terms of the agreement, FIU medical students and residents are now eligible to become members of the DCMA during their tenure as medical students and residents. By joining DCMA, they will gain access to benefits such as educational workshops, participation in medical research competitions, and mentorship opportunities within the Miami-Dade County community.

Dr. Carmel J. Barrau, President of the DCMA, and Chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “We are delighted to welcome FIU medical students and residents into the fold of the DCMA. This partnership represents a step forward in fostering collaboration and excellence in medical education and practice in our community.”

Dr. Juan C. Cendan, Dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU, echoed Dr. Barrau’s sentiments: “This agreement signifies our commitment to providing our students and residents with additional resources and opportunities that enrich their educational experience and pave the way for their success in the medical profession.”

The signing of the agreement was marked by the presence of Dr. Carmel J. Barrau, President of DCMA, and Chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, and Dr. Juan C. Cendan, Dean of Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU.
