April 24, 2023 — During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 23-29, 2023, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) recognizes the medical laboratory professionals who play a vital role in every aspect of health care and safeguard the public’s health by continually improving quality and safety, laboratory preparedness, workforce competencies, informatics and data science.

This recognition aims to increase public awareness about the importance of laboratory professionals and their role in clinical diagnostics and medicine. The exceptional efforts in the behind-the-scenes work of laboratories are essential to protecting public health. Medical laboratory professionals safeguard patient and public health by reducing diagnostic errors and preparing for disease outbreaks and health threats.

“Each day laboratory professionals save lives, reduce morbidity, and help control the cost of healthcare,” said Yesenia Villalta, DNP, MSN, APRN, Health Officer/Administrator of the Florida Department of Health on Miami-Dade County. “Even with increased lab automation, tests cannot be performed without the hands-on skills and knowledge of laboratorians. Lab professionals are a vital part of the care each of us receives and serve as part of the health care team to guide ongoing treatment and care.”

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is a time to show support and gratitude for the laboratory professionals who work tirelessly to ensure the quality and safety of patient care. DOH-Miami-Dade thanks all those who serve our community in this critical capacity.
