Brian L. Mendez, M.D., Associate Medical Director at Memorial Hospital Miramar, has spent 17 years in emergency medicine navigating the unpredictability and urgency of the ER. He says his approach to patient care is rooted in one guiding principle: treating every patient like family.

“Quality cannot be sacrificed for speed,” Dr. Mendez said. “When patients feel seen and cared for, not just processed, it changes their experience entirely.”

One case that continues to stay with him involved a young patient initially believed to have appendicitis. After losing consciousness, further testing revealed a life-threatening inherited cardiac disorder.

“What began as abdominal pain potentially saved an entire family,” Dr. Mendez said. “Emergency medicine gives you the chance to find what no one else thought of and change the course of a patient’s life.”
