The current national and international shortage of nurses has resulted in many healthcare organizations facing significant challenges. Cleveland Clinic in Florida recognizes that nurses play an integral part in our success and are essential to ensure the provision of safe, high quality patient care.

These challenges were at the forefront of our minds when we established Cleveland Clinic’s nursing philosophy. We believe that nursing must embody a culture that supports empowerment and accountability. Excellence is strongly supported through continuing education at Cleveland Clinic. Personal and professional growth is both encouraged and celebrated. Practice is based upon evidence and continuous review of performance. Nursing is nurtured, accomplishments recognized, and a collaborative team approach to the care of the patient is considered essential.

Consequently, we strive to create a work environment that embodies our philosophy and truly embraces the nurses we have while encouraging new nurses to join our team. Knowledge is power. So, in order to establish accountability, encourage a sense of empowerment and support excellence, the Staff Development Department plays an integral role. The team elicits feedback directly from the staff on their educational needs, and classes are provided based upon those needs.

Courses are scheduled at Cleveland Clinic to ensure that nurses from all shifts have the opportunity to attend. Many courses and symposiums facilitated by our physicians are also made available to nursing, including the International Colorectal Disease Symposium and the International Symposium of the Foregut, to name but a few. Nurses are also invited to attend Grand Rounds that are held weekly.

Our Professional Nursing Council and Council for Nursing Research and Evidenced Based Practice provide venues for staff nurses to be involved in policy and process development as well as the implementation of evidenced-based initiatives that affect nursing practice.

Cleveland Clinic is also in the process of initiating a Clinical Ladder program to recognize the professional accomplishments of our nurses. And, every two weeks, the administrative team rounds throughout the organization and publicly thanks and recognizes individuals who go above and beyond for patients or their colleagues.

We at Cleveland Clinic are also very proud of the physician collegiality and truly collaborative approach that nursing, the physicians and other members of the healthcare team take towards the care of our patients and their families. This relationship is based upon mutual respect and is evident every day, in every department.

Though these programs have resulted in the creation of a positive work environment, we are also cognizant of our ever changing environment in healthcare, and strive to be responsive to those changes as well as the changing needs of our nurses.
