Tampa General Hospital continues expanding its reach, connecting more patients in rural and urban communities to advanced capabilities, leading specialists and complex care.
Recent initiatives reflect a strategic effort to broaden access while strengthening community-based care. From a new radiation oncology center under construction in Palm Beach County to expanded services in rural communities, Tampa General is bringing academic medicine closer to where patients live, while maintaining access to highly specialized care in Tampa when needed.

Advancing Cancer Care in the Palm Beaches
A new option for cancer treatment is coming to Palm Beach County through a partnership between Tampa General and Mass General Brigham. The 10,000-square-foot, jointly owned radiation oncology center in Palm Beach Gardens will combine expertise from both organizations.
Tampa General will oversee daily operations, while Mass General Brigham Radiation Oncology will provide quality and safety oversight, supported by an integrated care team.
“We’ve already seen how our collaboration can benefit the patients we serve, and by working alongside Mass General Brigham to provide our patients with access to the expertise, experience and research findings from two of the top academic health systems, we have the potential to make a significant impact on their treatment outcomes,” said Dr. Abraham Schwarzberg, executive vice president, chief of oncology and president of the Tampa General Provider Network, and co-vice president of Clinical and Translation Research TGH | USF Health Office of Clinical Research.
Building a Health and Wellness Destination at Babcock Ranch
In Southwest Florida, Tampa General is helping transform Babcock Ranch into a destination for health and wellness in collaboration with developer Kitson & Partners.
“What they made extremely clear is they needed the traditional health care to start — then get creative later,” said Adam Smith, Tampa General executive vice president and chief ambulatory care officer.
Residents currently have access to a mobile primary care unit and a TGH Urgent Care powered by Fast Track for everyday health needs. The site also includes an Innovation Center, where an on-site nurse navigator helps residents engage with health monitoring tools and connected technologies. Further expansion is underway, including additional primary care offices and a laboratory.
Strengthening Rural Health in the Glades
Tampa General is advancing care in rural Palm Beach County through a partnership with the Health Care District of Palm Beach County to support Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade – the state’s only rural teaching hospital.
Tampa General is providing administrative leadership, operational management and strategic support, with a focus on expanding access to specialty services and improving outcomes.
Tampa General has “an altruistic commitment,” said Ronald J. Doncaster, vice president and Lakeside Medical Center administrator, “to engage with rural hospitals to provide access to academically focused care, and to do their part to sustain a very fragile rural health care ecosystem.”
Efforts are underway to reduce patient transfers by introducing high-demand specialty services locally while also strengthening recruitment and training.
“I’m very confident that by partnering with Tampa General’s academic health system and network of services, we’ll be able to attract more physicians and other clinical professionals, as well as support staff,” Doncaster said. “The goal is to create centers of excellence.”
Meeting Demand in Growing Communities
To address population growth in Citrus County, Tampa General is planning a new 400-bed hospital in the county, expanding access to acute care services in a rapidly growing region.
In Tampa, the organization is also investing in personalized care through the USF Health Pamela Muma Women’s Health Center and the new Chivukula Men’s Center scheduled to open in fall 2026. Together, the centers will offer concierge services and coordinated access to a wide range of specialties. Designed for convenience and comprehensive care, the centers will provide streamlined access to physicians, diagnostics and wellness services in one location.
