November 7, 2024 – Daniel Klinger, M.D., FAANS, a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army, once served on the front lines in Baghdad, Iraq, providing lifesaving care in a combat zone. Today, he continues to make a profound impact, saving lives as a neurosurgeon at Broward Health Medical Center in South Florida.

Growing up in a military family, Dr. Klinger was inspired by his father, an Army infantry officer, but chose to pursue his own path. Becoming the first in his family to attend medical school, Dr. Klinger focused on a career in medicine, ultimately specializing in neurosurgery. Years later, his sense of duty led him back to the military, where he served actively from 2016 to 2022, including a deployment to Baghdad. As part of a head and neck surgical detachment, he and his team provided essential surgical care to American soldiers, contractors, and Iraqi forces.

“Throughout the military and in military healthcare, particularly in the deployed setting, individuals and teams are often called on to do more with less to accomplish the mission,” Dr. Klinger said. “Anyone in healthcare can relate to this at some point, and I think building resilience from these experiences is helpful.”

Military service instilled in Dr. Klinger a deep appreciation for teamwork. In the military, as in healthcare, he believes success comes when everyone fully commits to the mission. Today, he applies the same tactics in the operating room, where his expertise lies in treating complex cranial and skull base tumors. A fellowship-trained specialist, Dr. Klinger uses advanced open and endoscopic techniques to treat conditions such as meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, and vestibular schwannomas with the goal of maximizing tumor removal and reducing patient morbidity.

Dr. Klinger’s passion for collaborative care drives his work, and he often teams with other skilled surgeons to improve patient outcomes. “It’s rewarding working with experienced co-surgeons because I feel like I’m always learning something from my colleagues, and I truly believe patient outcomes are better for it,” he said.
