Hospital physicians and colleagues joined in supporting 80+ organizations with hands-on service

May 21, 2024 — As reported by HCA: HCA Florida Healthcare the state’s leading network of hospitals and healthcare facilities, showed up for Florida residents with its third annual statewide We Show Up for Our Communities days of service last month. Physicians and colleagues from the more than 650 Florida healthcare facilities volunteered through 80 nonprofit and partner organizations to meet the needs of the communities where they live and work. During the last two weeks of April, HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues recorded nearly 3,000 hours of volunteer time to a variety of projects supporting high-priority community needs and advancing health equity.

The annual event began with the launch of the statewide brand in 2022 to unite colleagues across the system and invest in the neighborhoods served by each of HCA Florida Healthcare’s 48 hospitals. We Show Up for Our Communities is part of HCA Healthcare’s enterprise-wide focus to improve more lives in more ways.

HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues stepped forward to meet many community needs in April, including:

  • addressing food insecurity by sorting 23,340 pounds of food at community food banks, serving more than 1,245 meals to hungry neighbors at local homeless shelters and community kitchens and packaging more than 60,000 meals and snacks for Florida residents;
  • protecting Florida shorelines by collecting nearly 850 gallons of trash at beach and public area clean up events;
  • providing for immediate needs for individuals and families through the collection of 5,800 packs of diapers, sorting and assembling 600 personal hygiene kits, donating 130 units of blood and plasma;
  • and inspiring future generations through reading by collecting school supplies for 30 schools, delivering 1,250 books to area schools and mentoring and reading to young students.

Showing Up for Communities

HCA Florida Healthcare is proud to partner with community organizations and institutions to build a diverse pipeline of future healthcare workers, ensure access to mental health resources and build strong neighborhoods across Florida.

  • We Show Up for Mental Health: We’re proud to have partnered with EVERFI, an international technology company driving social change through education, to launch Mental Wellness Basics, a digital resource that introduces middle and high school students to mental health education.
  • We Show Up for Future Healthcare Professionals: HCA Florida Healthcare has invested $4 million in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), as well as high school programs around the state to foster healthcare career development.
  • We Show Up Every Day: Since launching the statewide brand in 2022, HCA Florida Healthcare has proudly supported local organizations across the state through our We Show Up for Our Communities events and a variety of community partnerships. In 2023, HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues from 650 facilities volunteered more than 29,000 hours and committed more than $2.18 million to community partner organizations in the Sunshine State.
