Northwest Hospital provides patients with new option to help men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

February 22, 2023  HCA Florida Northwest Hospital, a 289-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, is pleased to announce it has completed its first elective robotic aquablation procedure.

The minimally invasive surgery was completed by the father-son urology team, Dr. Azeem Sachedina and Dr. Nasheer Sachedina.

Aquablation is ideal for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The common condition is associated with urinating too often, urgently, or at night. In severe cases, this can lead to inability to urinate, kidney problems and infection.

“The aquablation procedure uses robotic technology and real-time ultrasound imaging to clean out the prostate,” said urologist Dr. Azeem Sachedina. “It uses a pressurized water jet at room temperature to remove the tissue at a very precise depth. It is akin to pressure cleaning out the prostate. The fact that the procedure does not involve any heating of the tissue is felt to result in less irritation and faster recovery.”

The robotic aquablation procedure’s main benefit is that it has fewer reported side effects than traditional methods for treating BPH. “Many men are concerned about possible urine leakage and sexual dysfunction,” said urologist Dr. Nasheer Sachedina. “They then settle for no treatment or other treatments that fall far short when it comes to outcomes. Aquablation limits urine leakage and sexual dysfunction to 0-1% chance of these life altering side effects.”

“We are proud of performing the first robotic aquablation procedure at Northwest Hospital and are continuously expanding the latest technology to enable us to always provide leading-edge services to the population we serve,” said HCA Florida Northwest Hospital CEO Kenneth Jones.
