March 23, 2023— HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital recently announced the opening of its new pelvic floor physical therapy clinic. The new clinic provides specialized treatment to educate patients and target their pelvic floor muscles.

“Pelvic floor conditions, like incontinence and organ prolapse, can sometimes be seen as taboo subjects, but they are so much more common than many women realize,” said Sally Seymour, CEO of HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital. “With the launch of our new clinic, we are aiming to help reduce the stigma around common challenges that most women experience at some point in their lifetime, and we are excited to be able to offer this much needed resource for patients in our community.”

The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, reproductive organs and the rectum. Pelvic floor therapy helps treat a variety of symptoms, such as frequent urination, accidental leakage of urine when sneezing our laughing, pain or pressure in the pelvic region, constipation, sexual dysfunction or organ prolapse.

“We want women to understand that just because they’ve had a baby, undergone surgery or are getting older, they shouldn’t have to put up with any of these debilitating symptoms,” said Marcey Wright, MPT, supervisor of the hospital’s physical therapy department. “We are looking forward to helping more women improve their lives in more ways through this new program.”

The clinic is being led by physical therapists Marcey Wright, MPT, Sarah Gray-LePere, DPT, and Melissa Boddington, DPT. In situations where patients may require more than therapy and need surgical intervention, HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital also has a strong panel of gynecologists and urologists that are experts in minimally invasive options.
