April 6, 2023 – HCA Florida University Hospital, a 165-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, now offers robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery.

The robot uses artificial intelligence combined with pre-operative planning tools and analytics, providing surgeons with a procedure map before the surgery starts.

“Technology is changing the way joint replacement surgeries are performed,” said HCA Florida University Hospital orthopedic surgeon Dr. Roby Abraham. “It’s still the surgeon performing the procedure with the assistance of the robotic arm, which allows for a higher level of accuracy and precision.”

Robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery allows for a more accurate implant placement compared to traditional joint replacement methods, meaning the patient likely experiences a more natural feeling joint. Using the robotic arm is also less invasive regarding bone cuts meaning patients can experience less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, a faster recovery and less scarring.

“As we continue to grow, we continue to invest in the latest medical technology,” said HCA Florida University Hospital CEO Madeline Nava. “Over time, robotic hip and knee replacement patients will require fewer surgical revisions than standard hip and knee surgeries. Our goal is to be a leader in robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgery.”

For those suffering from joint disease resulting from degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, an injury or fracture, or functional deformity of a joint, robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery may be an option.
