August 16, 2022 – HCA Florida University Hospital, a 165-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, recently completed its first minimally invasive procedure to treat pulmonary embolism (PE).

Patient 67-year-old Marla Juska was experiencing shortness of breath, low oxygen levels and low blood pressure prior to the 20-minute procedure.

“This is the first time I’ve had clots removed,” said patient Marla Juska. “I can’t explain it, but I’m excited to be the first person to have this procedure at this hospital.”

HCA Florida University Hospital interventional cardiologist Dr. Adam Bierzynski performed the procedure.

“Pulmonary embolism (PE) is generally treated with blood thinners, but in this case a more aggressive treatment was needed,” said Dr. Bierzynski. “This is a minimally invasive transcatheter procedure, done through the veins of the legs and traveling up to the lungs.”

HCA Florida University Hospital opened its cath lab in February. The dedicated 540-square-foot suite features computed tomography that allows highly-trained physicians to use non-surgical, minimally invasive techniques and imaging guidance to check a patient’s heart and blood supply.

“Being a new hospital, there will be many first procedures performed, but the staff and physicians are well-trained and proficient at all new procedures and techniques,” added Dr. Bierzynski. “HCA Florida University Hospital is a new, state-of-the-art facility with no expense spared to ensure patient safety and comfort.”
