December 8, 2022 – HCA Florida University Hospital, a 165-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, has been named an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by accreditation group The Joint Commission.

University Hospital underwent a rigorous, onsite review on October 3, 2022. During the visit, Th Joint Commission evaluated compliance with related certification standards, including early identification and treatment of patients diagnosed with stroke, data collection, and performance improvement, as well as alignment with applicable policies and internationally recognized clinical practice guidelines. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The reviewer also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“As a new hospital in the community, we are rapidly growing the services we offer to our patients and providing high-quality stroke care has been a priority for us since day one,” said HCA Florida University Hospital CEO Madeline Nava. “Our team of cardiovascular and neurological surgeons is truly exceptional and I am proud of what they do each day to provide excellent care to our patients.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke, and stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes are leading causes of stroke. One in three U. S. adults has at least one of these conditions or habits.

“Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend University Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for stroke patients.”
