From new programs and services to cutting-edge research to investments in research, Holy Cross Health continues to serve as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within local communities.

Here are some of the highlights in 2022:

ALS: The Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic Certified Treatment Center of ExcellenceSM, received a $25,000 grant from the ALS Association Florida Chapter to support operational excellence. In addition, the Institute is treating ALS with the drug AMX0035 to slow down progression of the disease, took in an influx of patients due to Hurricane Ian, is currently testing these Healey Platform Trials regimens: A- Zilucoplan; B- Verdiperstat; C- CNM-Au8 (Gold) and Clene (EAP); D- Pridopidine; and E- Trehalose (IV) and enrolling patients in a number of leading edge, unique research trials to advance the care of patients.

Varian Ethos Therapy: The Michael and Dianne Bienes Comprehensive Cancer Center is advancing treatment for cancer patients in South Florida and the Caribbean with the first Varian Etho Adaptive Intelligence system, an artificial intelligence-driven holistic solution designed to increase the capability, flexibility and efficiency of radiotherapy, designed to deliver an entire adaptive treatment in a typical 15-minute timeslot where changes in the anatomy that occur during the course of treatment are detected and accounted for when administering the targeted radiation.

Recognitions:

U.S. News & World Report named Holy Cross Health a High Performing Hospital with high performing ratings in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. The hospital was high performing in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Diabetes, Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, Kidney Disease, Knee Replacement and Stroke. It is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings. Holy Cross Health also was nationally recognized by the American Heart Association for its continued success in the Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure and Target: Type 2 Diabetes programs and received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for Fall 2022 for achievements in protecting patients from harm and error in the hospital. This is Holy Cross Health’s 5th consecutive A Safety Grade.

Continuing to strengthen and leverage community partnerships:

Holy Cross @ Sistrunk, located in the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center, is a nurse practitioner-led primary care clinic prepared to open in February 2023. This site will serve some of Broward’s most vulnerable populations. The clinic was built-out with all private dollars and grant awards.

The Family Health Center, scheduled to open in the spring, will serve children and families in 15,500 square feet of space dedicated to: Primary Care, Infectious Disease, Pediatric PT, OT, ST, outpatient laboratory services, community meeting and support rooms, collaborative space, a culinary teaching kitchen, a professional clothing closet, food pharmacy and future space for a pharmacy. Currently $2.1 million has been raised toward the $4.6 million goal thanks to The Jim Moran Foundation and The Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Foundation and other generous supporters.

The Community Vaccine Program provides community-based vaccines to vulnerable communities, keeping the community safe from COVID, Monkeypox and various other community-acquired childhood and adult diseases. Outreach efforts continue to respond to our local needs.

New Vision: As part of the framework for addressing substance use disorders in South Florida, Holy Cross launched medical detoxification services to help people overcome withdrawal symptoms from drug and alcohol addictions through the New Vision withdrawal management service. New Vision treats adults with a medically supervised hospital stay for inpatient stabilization. The patient can detox from a substance in a safe, medically supervised environment.

Vice President Named: Laura Denoux was named vice president and chief development officer for Holy Cross Health. A 22-year veteran in fundraising and sales, Laura is focused on securing major gifts and building strong relationships with donors, while leading the development and implementation of all fundraising efforts including developing and organizing campaigns to meet capital and other ongoing programmatic needs of the hospital.

Holy Cross Outpatient Rehabilitation Institute: The seventh Institute opened in Broward County offering one-on-one individualized physical therapy through a comprehensive continuum of care to meet patients’ rehabilitation needs. This new location in Pompano Beach will soon include a range of occupational therapy services.

ArtServe: Holy Cross continues its partnership with ArtServe be featuring exhibitions by South Florida female artists on display at the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center at Holy Cross HealthPlex.

Holy Cross Health Agewell Center: This comprehensive, collaborative center, focused on healthcare, well-being and social interaction, all of which are extremely important to everyone’s mental health, regardless of age, continues to thrive while helping the aging population in South Florida live their healthiest and most active lives. The model of care for the AgeWell Center serves those who are Medicare eligible and provides services needed to age successfully.
