July 24, 2025 – Holy Cross Health recently completed its Community Health Needs Assessment, identifying Access to Healthcare as a top priority. Among the most vulnerable are underserved seniors, who often face transportation barriers, digital illiteracy, social isolation, and financial hardship—factors that significantly contribute to poor health outcomes.
Broward County’s aging population is growing rapidly. Many older adults encounter systemic barriers to care, including language differences, lack of insurance, and mistrust in healthcare providers. Additionally, existing community resources are often fragmented and underutilized due to limited awareness and coordination.
Key Findings from the FY26–FY28 Assessment:
- 18.5% of Broward County residents are aged 65 and older; 2.4% are 85 and older.
- The population aged 80–84 is projected to grow by 73% over the next 12 years.
- Nearly 50% of people living with HIV are aged 50 or older, with significant growth expected among those over 60.
- 34% of seniors live with one or more disabilities.
- Approximately 15.2% of the population lives below 125% of the federal poverty level, including 12.5% of seniors aged 64 and older.
These statistics highlight a critical gap in equitable, affordable, and culturally competent healthcare—particularly for aging populations. Without targeted interventions, disparities will continue to grow, leading to:
- Increased emergency room visits for preventable conditions
- Poor chronic disease management
- Declining mental and physical well-being
- Rising public health costs and strain on healthcare systems
Introducing the Silver Pride Connection
In response, the Holy Cross Health Community Health and Well-Being Department is launching the Silver Pride Connection—a senior-focused initiative designed to improve health equity and access for older adults, including LGBTQ seniors who face unique challenges.
Program Components:
- Educational Workshops: Covering health literacy, insurance navigation, preventive care, and technology use
- Community Linkages: Direct referrals to culturally competent providers, transportation, mental health services, and advocacy organizations
- Peer Educator Model: Senior ambassadors will guide and connect peers to services
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Ongoing tracking of engagement, healthcare utilization, and satisfaction to refine the program
The Silver Pride Connection offers an affirming space for connection, empowerment, and holistic care tailored to senior needs. It aims to combat loneliness, foster meaningful relationships, and ensure seniors are equipped with the tools and knowledge to navigate their health journeys confidently.
