Dale Ryan is the Informatics Nurse for Nursing Service and the BCMA (Bar Code Medicine Administration) Coordinator for the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. She is an integral part of the advances in Information Technology occurring at the medical center. When asked about the most significant advances impacting delivery of health care, here were her thoughts.

One of the most significant advances impacting delivery of health care is the ability to safely administer medications at the bedside using wireless technology. The VA development of Bar Code Medication Administration significantly impacts on decrease in medication administration errors by ensuring the right patient, right drug, right dose, right time and right route. As wireless technology advances in health care, the utilization of small PDA’s with built in scanners for everything from scanning blood products, blood draws, intake and output and other data for up to date, real time shared secured information will continue to develop and grow. This is the VA Bar Code Expansion Project (BCE).

The advent and growth of the VA Nurses Outcome Database (VANOD) to seamlessly collect both administrative and clinical data will have an enormous impact on nursing evidence based outcomes. Indicator data collection and extraction for the near future include the ability to gather data on skin risk, falls, and staff injuries.
