Serving as President of the Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) during the 2025-2026 year has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. Leading an organization with more than a century of history carries both responsibility and opportunity. This past year reaffirmed for me the extraordinary power of organized medicine, not only to unite physicians, but to elevate patient care, strengthen community partnerships, and position BCMA as a leading voice of cooperation and influence in healthcare.
From the outset, my mission as president was clear: to help BCMA shine like a shooting star, highly visible, impactful, and impossible to ignore, while putting our organization firmly on the map as a unifying force for medicine in Broward County. That mission was rooted in unity, advocacy, innovation, and fiscal stewardship.
One of our most significant milestones was achieving the highest fundraising campaign in BCMA’s 100-year history, a testament to the trust, engagement, and shared purpose of our members and partners. This success enabled us to strengthen our organizational foundation, guide BCMA through a successful reorganization, and reach a new level of fiscal optimization and sustainability, ensuring the long-term health of the Association.
Community unity and engagement were central to our work. We saw tremendous growth in participation and visibility, supported by enhanced communications and active engagement through our new member newsletter. These efforts helped reconnect physicians to BCMA and to one another at a time when connection is more important than ever.
Innovation also played a critical role in our progress. BCMA expanded into AI-driven discussions, digital engagement, and podcasting, embracing new platforms to educate, inform, and amplify the physician voice. We strengthened the curriculum of our Business of Medicine educational series, equipping physicians with practical tools to navigate leadership, compliance, practice sustainability, and emerging technologies.
A hallmark achievement this year was the launch of The Future of Healthcare Roundtable, which brought together physicians, local and state policymakers, university leaders, executives, and community stakeholders. This initiative positioned BCMA at the forefront of shaping healthcare conversations in Broward County and reinforced our role as leaders in collaborative problem-solving.
Advocacy remained a cornerstone of our mission. BCMA hosted tremendous local gatherings of Broward’s legislative delegation, led legislative forums, and advanced meaningful advocacy efforts in Tallahassee. These engagements contributed to significant progress on critical healthcare legislation, reinforcing that physicians must have a seat at the table when decisions affecting patient care are made.
This year also brought historic recognition. For the first time, BCMA received the Excellence in Healthcare Award from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, validating the collective impact of our members and our growing influence across the region.
Investing in the future of medicine was equally important. We proudly supported medical students and residents through the MDMCA Research Competition and established the Cynthia Peterson Legacy Fund Scholarship, a lasting initiative dedicated to supporting medical students in Broward County while honoring a legacy of mentorship, compassion, and service.
Our commitment to inclusion and wellbeing remained strong through successful Women in Medicine initiatives and professional networking events that fostered mentorship, collaboration, and community.
I am proud to say that our mission was achieved, but the work is not over. We have served as stewards of this remarkable organization, and with continued love, passion, and dedication, BCMA will keep growing on these principles. Together, we will remain the voice of our members, protect our patients and community, and deepen collaboration with all stakeholders who share our vision.
I look forward to passing these values on to future leaders, confident that BCMA will continue to shine brightly as a guiding star for organized medicine in Broward County.
