March 24, 2023 – LeadingAge Florida, Florida’s only association representing the entire continuum of care for older adults, issued a statement following the passing of SB 102.

The following statement is attributable to President and CEO Steve Bahmer.

“The demand for affordable senior housing in Florida dramatically outstrips the supply, and older adults can spend as many as five years or more on a waiting list before housing becomes available. Among other things, this legislation fully funds Florida’s SHIP and SAIL programs and provides a record amount of funding for the Sadowski Trust Fund, making it easier to build and preserve affordable senior housing.

Improving the housing supply is an important step in tackling the problem and will better assist our member communities in connecting residents to the services and supports they need to age independently.

“We appreciate Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, Senator Alexis Catalayud and Representative Demi Busatta Cabrera’s leadership in passing this important piece of legislation and urge the Governor to sign it into law.

For 60 years, LeadingAge Florida has been the state’s leading advocate for high-quality senior living, aging services and care. We are the only statewide association representing the full continuum of care for seniors. The Association provides up-to-date regulatory information, a wide variety of educational opportunities, representation before the Legislature and government agencies, group purchasing services, and opportunities for networking with peers to help member communities best serve the needs of Florida’s senior population.
