Patient with end-stage hip arthritis undergoes minimally invasive joint replacement, receives postoperative physical therapy while lodging locally, and returns home the following day

June 9, 2025 – Dr. Jonathan Shaw, M.D., is a local, fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon at the Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute in West Palm Beach, FL. He specializes in minimally invasive total hip and knee replacement, robotic surgery, revision joint replacement, and nonoperative care for hip and knee arthritis.

Dr. Shaw recently coordinated surgical travel for a patient living in Orlando, FL, to come to Palm Beach County for a life-altering procedure. Travel for joint replacement procedures is becoming increasingly common in arthroplasty, particularly due to the reduced recovery time and the growing feasibility of same-day discharge. The patient is scheduled to undergo hip replacement surgery to address end-stage arthritis. Travel to West Palm Beach is planned for the day before the procedure, with accommodations arranged near the Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute.

The patient elected to travel to receive care from a trusted surgeon. Dr. Shaw has arranged for postoperative physical therapy to be initiated in the patient’s hotel room to support early recovery. Once the patient is stable and comfortable, typically within a day following the procedure, he will return to Orlando to continue his rehabilitation locally.
