According to Healthy People 2020 (launched in Dec. 2010), an estimated 13 million people in the United States have a serious debilitating mental illness in any given year. In Miami Dade County in particular, risk factors such as substance and alcohol abuse are on par with the national average, and thus speaks to the need to treat populations that either have or are at risk of developing behavioral health disorders. In recognizing this community need, MDC Medical Campus recently launched a new training program referred to as SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment). This training will help any health care provider learn how to seamlessly screen patients for any substance abuse problems, assess their results, and then motivate these patients to change their behavior or refer those with dependency issues to have further assessment and evaluation.

In addition to SBIRT, MDC Medical offers more than twenty additional programs to further your health care education. Currently, the Community Health Worker (CHW), Behavioral Health Technician, and SBIRT training programs are free of charge for health care professionals, adult learners, and others in the community that are interested. For the past two years, MDC Medical has trained over 200 Community Health Workers and 300 Behavioral Health Technicians, taking a proactive approach of embedding the CHW curriculum into the Medical Assisting program.

Students at MDC Medical have completed the Community Health Worker training upon graduation which will enable them to better serve the community and improve access and coverage to basic health care and improve outcomes. Medical Assisting Program Coordinator Dr. Marta Lopez states: “This training can have a substantial health impact in the community and be an integral part of the health care system. The more skills that these health care workers have, the more they are able to be in touch with the needs of their communities.”

Additionally, this added training enables the Medical Assistant further mastery of skills to continue on their career pathway.
