Midway Specialty Care Center, a Florida-based nonprofit founded in 2013, has built its work around a simple truth: Addressing this crisis requires more than clinical care alone.

Founded by Dr. Moti Ramgopal, an internationally recognized infectious disease physician, Midway has grown from a single practice into a dual-faceted organization with more than 16 clinical locations throughout Florida and a research division that has conducted over 250 clinical trials. This combined approach allows patients to receive compassionate care today while gaining access to the breakthrough treatments of tomorrow.

Services include free rapid HIV testing, STI screening and treatment, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for HIV prevention, hepatitis treatment, travel medicine consultations, and hospital referrals when specialized care is needed. Mental health support and peer navigators help patients manage not just their physical health but also the emotional and social challenges that often accompany an infectious disease diagnosis.
The organization’s specialty pharmacy simplifies medication management for patients dealing with complex treatment regimens, ensuring seamless access to the medications they need without bureaucratic barriers or delays.

Research That Changes Lives
Through Midway Immunology & Research Center, the organization’s research division has become a significant contributor to global advances in infectious disease treatment. With more than 250 clinical trials conducted, Midway brings a unique element to the medical treatment journey: Patients can receive world-class clinical care while having first access to experimental therapies that aren’t yet available to the broader public. For people who can’t afford expensive medications or who’ve stopped responding to conventional treatments, this research access can be life-saving.
At Midway Immunology & Research Center, research is driven by a focus on patient outcomes and real-world impact. In fact, Dr. Ramgopal’s research work has appeared in important peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, Nature Medicine, The New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA, with more than 3,800 citations to his research. In 2023, he served as Lead Principal Investigator for the landmark SOLAR study, which found that 90% of participants preferred long-acting injectable HIV treatment over daily oral medications. This single study has fundamentally reshaped how doctors and patients think about HIV therapy globally. He also co-authored the groundbreaking PURPOSE 2 study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which demonstrated that twice-yearly lenacapavir reduced HIV infections by 96% in men and gender-diverse individuals.
Most recently in 2025, the research team has contributed to studies on once-weekly oral HIV therapy, novel anti-PD-1 inhibitors for people living with HIV, and next-generation pneumococcal vaccines. These aren’t abstract scientific exercises; they’re investigations that directly benefit Midway patients and the community.
The research work also extends beyond Florida’s borders. Dr. Ramgopal has served as Medical Director for PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) in Guyana and opened two clinics in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, to expand HIV care access in the Caribbean. He’s also an HIV consultant to the Ministry of Health in Turks and Caicos.
