May 29, 2025 – Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute has received national recognition through two prestigious honors awarded to its chief scientific officer and chief of medical oncology, further elevating the organization’s standing as a leader in academic medicine and cancer research.

Dr. Manmeet Ahluwalia, who also serves as deputy director and holds the Fernandez Family Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, was recently:

-Elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), becoming the first physician from Baptist Health and its academic affiliate Florida International University to achieve this distinction.

-Awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, presented May 10 in New York City. This distinguished civilian award, previously bestowed upon U.S. presidents, Nobel laureates and healthcare pioneers—including Baptist Health’s own Dr. Michael Zinner—recognizes individuals who exemplify a life dedicated to service and excellence.

Founded in 1908, ASCI is one of the most respected medical honor societies in the United States, with members from elite institutions including Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Memorial Sloan Kettering. The Ellis Island Medal of Honor, awarded by the Ellis Island Honors Society, celebrates individuals who embody the American spirit of diversity, compassion and community service.
