The Broward Health facility serves children and teenagers with special healthcare needs

August 9, 2023 – Paulo A. Oliveira, DDS, has joined the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) Pediatric Dental Clinic team.

CDTC’s Pediatric Dental Clinic provides routine and preventative care for children from infancy through adolescence who have special healthcare needs such as chronic illnesses and developmental challenges. Services include exams and cleanings, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, restorations, extractions, and other procedures. A Broward Health subsidiary, CDTC accepts most insurance and Medicaid plans.

“Children with special needs can have unique oral health issues due to their condition, medications or diet,” Dr. Oliveira said. “Our team is specially trained and equipped to accommodate them without causing anxiety or trauma. I use behavior management techniques to help young patients feel comfortable in the dental chair and understand what is happening to them. We begin with a show, tell and do method using as many visits as necessary to establish their trust.”

With a lifelong mission to help the underserved receive dental care, Dr. Oliveira first began working as a dental assistant and educating preschoolers about oral hygiene in his homeland of Brazil and then in St. Croix. He came to the U.S. and worked as a dental assistant in surgical and restorative dentistry and with patients living with HIV. At Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Oliveira completed an advanced education in general dentistry residency, focusing on special needs patients.

Fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Dr. Oliveira is a National Health Service Corps participant and has provided dental care to underserved populations in Jamaica, the Fiji Islands, Nicaragua and Bolivia through various mission trips and Mission of Mercy. He also serves as a clinical director to Special Olympics Florida Special Smiles.
