Congratulations to the eighteen south Florida physicians who were selected as participants for the Physician Leadership Academy of South Florida (PLA) for 2017-2018. The PLA, now in its second year, is offering educational and informational workshops which will help participants build their leadership skills and expertise. A wide array of topics including working with the media, mastering the role of physician as advocate, building your cultural competency and becoming a transformational leader as well as information about health care issues facing Floridians will be on the agenda of this year’s monthly sessions. From October 2017 through May 2018 the focus of the sessions will be to enable PLA class members to understand how they can make significant differences in the leadership roles presently held and those they anticipate holding.

Palm Beach County Medical Society Services was awarded the second year of funding from The Physicians Foundation. The funds cover the costs of PLA programs and activities. The Academy, under the auspices of the Palm Beach County Medical Society (PBCMS), is being held in collaboration with the Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) and Dade County Medical Association (DCMA). Six physicians were selected from each of the three local Medical Associations to participate in this year’s Academy. The PLA has been endorsed by the Florida Medical Association, which is providing CMEs to all attendees.

During the PLA opening retreat weekend in October, participants began to look at how personalities and various communication styles affect and impact leadership roles and how various. In addition, at the retreat all participants were assigned to one of six teams and each team chose a leadership project which they will work on over the year and present their findings on at their graduation in May 2017. In November the class members began to engage in in-depth leadership assessment processes.

Advisory Committee members overseeing the PLA are Dr. James Goldenberg serving as Chair along with Dr. Paco Arrascue and Dr. Alan Pillersdorf from Palm Beach County, Dr. Randy Pevsner and Dr. Ralph Zagha from Broward County and Dr. Eduardo G.
