For the third year in a row, Palm Beach County Medical Society Services is presenting a series of educational seminars for physicians and healthcare providers to increase awareness that anyone – including physicians — can be adversely affected by the growing opioid epidemic. The aim of the series is to highlight the consequences of addiction, the warning signs and symptoms, and detail the resources available to individuals suffering from chemical dependency.
Who:
Dr. Richard Morgan, D.O, who completed his residency at NYU Medical Center, was exposed to opiates during a routine dental procedure. A series of bad choices and unfortunate circumstances fueled by his addiction led Dr. Morgan to a federal indictment and, ultimately a 14-year federal prison sentence. Today, he spends his time sharing his story to educate medical students, practicing physicians and all clinicians about how to recognize addiction and guide patients to the help they need.

The nonprofit arm of the Medical Society provides and coordinates continuing medical education for physicians and allied health professionals. PBCMS Services also works to inform and educate the public about health care issues, strives to find ways to improve patient access to health care, and collects and studies information on the health care delivery system.
The overarching goal of the Opioid Healthcare Response program is to reduce opioid deaths in Palm Beach County through an evidenced-based comprehensive strategy that recognizes addiction as a medical illness. The key elements of the initiative are prevention, treatment, rescue and recovery, all tied to specific outcome metrics.
