If youre a regular reader of my monthly ramblings, Im sure youve figured out by now that Carol and I have vastly different definitions of “affordable.” I tend to live for today (foolishly perhaps), while she prefers to linger in the land of “what-if.” Such as what-if that $5 could be spend more wisely elsewhere and especially what-if the cost of that camera is NOT affordable.
But living and working in South Florida, its hard not to be confronted by the oxymoron Affordable Housing. Its a known fact that South Florida hospitals and healthcare employers face a difficult task both keeping and hiring employees because of housing costs in our area. And I dont think it would be exaggerating to say that there isnt a single committee I belong to that doesnt see Affordable Housing as a significant roadblock to improving our future and existing healthcare community.
So you ask whats the point? Well, although, South Florida Hospital News hasnt come up with the “giant step for mankind,” we hope were embarking on, at the very least, a small step. Starting this month, in conjunction with area housing professionals, we are featuring an Affordable Housing section. Broken down by proximity to area hospitals, listings will include both purchase and rental options all under $300,000 or $ 1,500 per month rental. No, I have not visited every property nor do I guarantee a perfect real estate experience; but if this assists one nurse or healthcare technician find the right place to live at a price they can afford it will be well worth our efforts. Initially, I know it wont suit every pocketbook, but were definitely going to try. So look for this section to grow and we invite real estate professionals to give us a call to find out how they can participate in this new Hospital News feature. Were even establishing a website www.SOUTHFLORIDAHEALTHCAREHOUSING.COM to complement our printed publication. Hopefully, it should be up and running by early November.
On a lighter note, the Frog Vendetta at the Felix home continues. Thanks for all your great suggestions but no luck so far. A public relations friend in Boca suggested we use kosher salt as a deterrent. What can I say Gabby now thinks the backyard is a great big Margarita glass!
