Hana Hamze, a clinical manager in the oncology unit at Memorial Regional Hospital, originally wanted to be a nurse in the emergency department, but found her personality was more suited to caring for cancer patients.

“It’s important to be compassionate, of course, but also to appreciate the journey the patient and their family are on and the toll it takes on all of them,” said Hamze. “I don’t just provide care in that moment, I stand with them and build lasting relationships that endure even after discharge.”

Hamze said former patients can always reach out if they have questions. It’s the same, she says, for fellow nurses on the night shift. “I’m always there for them and ready to navigate issues together. I enjoy teaching, being a mentor and want them to be comfortable seeking guidance,” said the recent Daisy Award winner.
