For more than a decade, Doug Gorab has volunteered at Broward Health Imperial Point, continuing a commitment he first shared with his late partner.

Now 82, Gorab helps lead the hospital’s concierge program, a first-of-its-kind volunteer initiative in the main lobby designed to welcome patients and families the moment they walk through the door. He trains new volunteers and even created a custom hospital map and written guide.

“No one’s happy to walk through those doors,” he said, “so we smile at them first.” Whether escorting a visitor, pushing a wheelchair or pointing someone in the right direction, Gorab brings warmth and purpose to every shift.

A former United Airlines employee and Chicago real estate professional, Gorab found his way to volunteering after moving to Florida. He credits the work with keeping him sharp, active and connected. “It keeps you young,” he said. “I leave tired, but it’s a good tired.”
