Once upon a time in the cozy town called Boca, there lived a man named Charles (me), who was blissfully surrounded by the relics of his bygone hobbies. Charles’ garage resembled a time capsule of forgotten interests – from dusty decades-old stamp albums, battered coin collector magazines to several file cabinets filled with old cameras and accessories. All of which looked like they’d seen better days.
Well, Carol (my spouse) had finally reached her breaking point. She declared, with a determined glint in her eye, that it was past time for me to bid goodbye to my old hobbies and embrace a much more minimalist lifestyle. Little did I know that my beloved collections of stuff (probably more aptly named junk) were about to face the scrutiny of her ruthless decluttering campaign. And I guess after 52 years of marriage and accumulating, moving and storing, all my hobbies had finally met their match.
The saga began with Carol presenting me with a brand-new box of garbage bads and a determined voice, “It’s cleaning out day, whether you like it or not.” Caught off guard, I couldn’t even think of a good excuse especially after she flashed a photo of the garage roach which had sparked her sudden decision.
Armed with a trash bag and an iron will, Carol began holding up each item and asking the age-old question, “When was the last time you looked at this?” When I would balk, she’d then ask, “Did you even know this was in the garage?” And so, I reluctantly parted ways with my dusty old collections, consigning much to Goodwill and even more to the garbage dump.
The battle of hobbies raged on, with Carol gloating over the ever-growing pile of my outdated gadgets, dusty relics, and usually brief and forgotten passions. In the end, I found myself surrounded by a decluttered, newly organized garage but couldn’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the eccentric treasures I’d reluctantly bid farewell to.
And thus, the tale of Charles and Carol, the hobby hoarder and the decluttering queen, came to an amusing close, leaving our little abode a “harmonious” blend of memories and minimalism.
