South Miami’s new Innovative Center for Innovative Medicine building, designed by Gresham, Smith and Partners, has recently opened its doors to patients. The 61,500-square-foot, four-story radiation and cancer treatment facility includes a clinical area, offices and parking garage. The Innovative Cancer Institute is located on the building’s first floor and features a new Varian Edge radiotherapy system, a first-of-its-kind technology in the state of Florida. The Varian Edge™ system is among the world’s most advanced radiotherapy/radiosurgery technologies. It delivers flexible cancer treatments and tumor-destroying radiation for a variety of cancer types with pinpoint accuracy and precision, ease and speed, while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. The equipment is housed in a Veritas radiation-shielded treatment vault constructed with stackable ultra-high-density VeriShield™ concrete blocks, a groundbreaking Veritas ShieldTech™ entry door and modular interior finishes. The Innovative Cancer Institute’s other treatment technologies include brachytherapy, conformal therapy, IMRT, IGRT, and RapidArc™; as well as a dedicated 64-slice wide-bore “state-of-the-art” Siemens CT scanner for radiation treatment planning. Dr. Amendola and her team are nationally and internationally known for their innovative work using radiosurgery for lung, liver and spine cancer and advanced brachytherapy for breast cancer using accelerated partial breast irradiation.
The building is styled with sleek, progressive features that complement the emerging South Miami neighborhood. Aluminum cladding, frosted and clear glass, brushed metal signage and a smooth-texture white stucco finish distinguish the exterior. Eye-catching interior features such as art collections, waiting-area landscaping and views to lush gardens generate interest and alleviate anxiety. Neutral, contemporary offices and clinical areas contribute to a calming aesthetic.
