May 27, 2025 – There is a significant shift across the United States to cater to expecting mothers – and Miami is front and center. Hospitals are spending millions of dollars for mega-projects to overhaul and refurbish maternity wards into “hospitality suites” that cater to not just the mother, but the father, other family members and the baby itself. Why: where to deliver your child is one of the few choices health care American patients get to make on their own when choosing a hospital.
This project was designed by Florida-based mother and engineer April Woods of engineering firm WSP. Women’s care has been her focus in her 20-year career. Her designs include everything from making sure there are power outlets everywhere for parents and family to charge devices, high-speed WiFi, to lighting, acoustics and color. These new rooms even include a NICU right in the room, so that even if there are complications, the mother and baby can continue to connect in the hours and days after childbirth.
