March 13, 2024 – On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention hosted the inaugural National Addictions Solutions Summit at the Riverside Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. More than 200 community leaders, prevention specialists, social workers, and licensed counselors joined in this free event to learn and discuss solutions for new prevention and innovative strategies.
During the Summit, United Way of Broward County’s President/CEO Kathleen Cannon welcomed guests and introduced speakers such as Broward Sheriff Greg Tony, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, and Dr. Stephen Loyd, Chief Medical Officer of Tennessee-based Cedar Recovery. Dr. Loyd is the inspiration behind Michael Keaton’s character in the Emmy Award-winning series “Dopesick,” and has been in recovery since 2004. Panel topics discussed during the event included Data Sharing Systems, Evidence-Based Responses, Novel and Promising Strategies, Prevention Strategies, and the Importance of Creating Positive Public Private Partnerships with a Q&A.
