University of Miami President Julio Frenk, M.D., will be one of the distinguished keynote speakers at the fifth annual health care impact conference hosted by the University’s School of Business Administration on Monday, March 21, 2016. The day-long conference, “The Business of Health Care: Going Global,” organized by the School’s Center for Health Sector Management and Policy, will address timely issues such as medical tourism, pharmaceutical and biotech opportunities, integrated multi-national health care system issues associated with finance, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures in global health.

"Our conference brings together health care and business leaders as well as policy makers to reflect on these significant business issues effecting all of us; directly for those in the health care industry and indirectly as businesses struggle with the high and rising cost of health care for both themselves and their employees,” said Steven G. Ullmann, director of the Center for Health Sector Management and Policy. "We all have much to learn from each other, and this is an excellent forum to facilitate those discussions."

The 2015 conference attracted a record-breaking 740 attendees, and Ullmann is expecting a similar turnout in 2016.

"This will be a great opportunity to hear from President Frenk, who has a deep understanding of global public health issues," he said.  The line-up of keynote speakers and panelists will be of significance and have a local, regional, and global impact.

A native of Mexico, Frenk is a physician who served as Mexico’s minister of health and dean of Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health before becoming the University of Miami’s sixth president on August 16.

The annual health care conference is among a number of health sector initiatives undertaken and programs offered by the University of Miami School of Business. Others include an Executive MBA in Health Sector Management and Policy program, which the School has offered for more than 35 years. Classes are held one weekend per month and bring together physicians, health care administrators, nurses, and other experienced health care professionals reflecting the microcosm of the health care industry. The program, with students averaging 14 years of professional experience, teaches practical administrative skills as well as broad strategic and theoretical perspectives to professionals who seek to expand their knowledge of management and administration as applied to the health care industry. The next class begins in January 2016.
