In a career that has spanned 40 years, Patty Hood has always wanted to make a difference by providing quality care to her patients. As the Director of Pediatrics/Medical Surgery at Glades General Hospital (GGH), she supervises a staff of 24 nurses, including L.P.N.s, R.N.s, and C.N.A.s. She is responsible for schedules, nurse staffing hours, payroll, evaluation, and continuing education. Hood also oversees daily care of GGH patients. Her most rewarding role is the working relationship she has with all levels of staff in the hospital in what she calls “a culture of caring.”

Hood began her career at GGH in 1966 as a high school student working in the medical records department. During nursing school in Panama City, she returned to work at GGH every summer and also instituted a candy striper program. On June 29, 1968, Hood began her full-time nursing career at Glades General. Over the last four decades she has served as a nurse in every department of the hospital. From delivering babies to coping with family tragedy and crisis, Hood has experienced all aspects of nursing during her tenure.

Hood is truly dedicated to her profession. “This is one of the only professions that you can have a direct impact on someone’s life,” said Hood. “It’s been my blessing that I’ve been able to create 40 years of relationships and treat the grandchildren of former patients.” Hood has been recognized by the healthcare community for her genuine care for others—both patients and staff. In 2007 she received the Palm Healthcare Foundation Nursing Distinction Awards Extra Mile Award, which recognizes a nurse who fosters professional growth in others and serves the community as a mentor or volunteer.
