May 7, 2027 – A heartfelt wish was recently fulfilled for 95-year-old hospice patient Gloria Princigalli: a surprise birthday visit from Mochi, a fluffy white bunny. Known for her love of rabbits, Gloria’s room at her nursing home in Miami Lakes is filled with bunny-themed décor and plushies, a reflection of a passion that brought joy throughout her life.

The visit was made possible through the collaboration of her VITAS Healthcare hospice volunteer Jake Smith, who first learned of Gloria’s passion through conversation, and VITAS team members, who worked together to turn a simple idea into a meaningful experience. Mochi’s visit brought smiles, laughter, and a moment of pure joy to Gloria’s special day.

Volunteers are a vital part of the hospice care team, bridging the gap between patients and specialized end-of-life care experts through companionship and practical support. VITAS and the Medicare Hospice Benefit were founded almost 50 years ago on the strength of volunteers, ensuring seriously ill patients and their loved ones feel seen and less alone during life’s final chapter.

This touching moment between Gloria and Mochi demonstrates how quality end-of-life care honors the individuality of each patient by creating personalized experiences that bring comfort and dignity in whatever time remains.
