HVAC systems, consisting of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning components, are crucial for maintaining indoor comfort in residential and commercial buildings. However, these systems can also contribute significantly to indoor air quality (IAQ) problems if not properly maintained, engineered and managed. Understanding the various aspects of HVAC systems which impact air quality is essential for improving health outcomes and enhancing overall comfort in indoor environments.
One of the primary roles of an HVAC system is to circulate and condition air within a building. This process requires the intake of outdoor air, which plays a pivotal role in determining indoor air quality. Outdoor air, while generally fresher than indoor air, can carry pollutants such as pollen, dust, mold, vehicle emissions, and other contaminants. If an HVAC system inadequately manages outdoor air intake, these pollutants can enter and circulate through the building.
