Broward Health has partnered with HealX Oncology to provide a holistic cutting-edge radiation oncology solution for South Florida cancer patients. We believe our program will deliver world-class radiation oncology care by integrating the very best technologies and clinical teams.

The Comprehensive Cancer Centers at Broward General Medical Center and at North Broward Medical Center, will offer a spectrum of radiation oncology options that have thus far been available only at a handful of large university-based hospitals. Our program will include:

  • Proton Beam Radiation
  • CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery
  • IMRT/IGRT Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerators

Up until 2005, there were only three clinical proton facilities in North America. Broward Health’s purchase of the Still River Systems Clinatron-250 PBRT system will soon offer proton beam radiotherapy at Broward General Medical Center. This will provide patients truly unique options that have thus far not been available in a community health-care system. Protons have unique physics properties that allow the delivery of extremely precise radiation to tumor sites, while minimizing dose to nearby healthy tissues. Protons can be used to treat a number of body sites, including the brain, head and neck, prostate, and are particularly beneficial for pediatric tumors. Historically, proton facilities have cost over $100 million dollars to build. However, with recent advances, it is now possible to bring such innovative technology to Broward Health for a fraction of the cost. Our oncology vision is to distill these rare technologies out of an academic environment directly into a main-stream setting so we’re able to treat all members of the South Florida community.

CyberKnife is the cutting-edge whole-body RadioSurgery solution. It can be used to treat a number of body sites including the brain, lung, para-spinal tumors, head and neck, prostate, and liver, for example. It is non-invasive (no open surgery needed) and offers real-time imaging to track tumor motion. This technology is used in a collaborative fashion by radiation oncologists and surgical sub-specialists to again offer truly world-class radiation therapy options for our community patients. Broward County’s first and only CyberKnife unit will be housed at our North Broward Medical Center.

We have purchased the most advanced Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerators which will be located at both Broward General and North Broward Medical Centers. These use extremely sophisticated hardware and software technologies to deliver radiation treatments that can be used to treat cancer at almost any body site. Often radiation is given in conjunction with chemotherapy or after surgery, and our Comprehensive Cancer Centers allow us to offer our patients true multi-disciplinary evaluation and care by combining experts from all oncology sub-specialties (radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology) to provide the very best cancer treatment options for our Broward Health patients. Our Linear Accelerators are equipped with IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy) – which again offer our patients unparalleled care.
