University Hospital and Medical Center has had an incredibly active and dynamic year, and 2008 will be remembered as one for major accomplishments.

In March 2008, the facility began offering private rooms for its patients. This initiative, while enhancing patients’ privacy, safety and convenience has allowed University Hospital to stand out as the only facility of its type to offer private rooms in this market. As requests for private rooms were growing at a steady pace, the decision was made not only to be in line with infection control and patient safety guidelines, but also to continue to foster an environment where dignity and compassion exist for the patient at a time when they’re most vulnerable.

Simultaneously, all the rooms and several nursing areas have begun undergoing a major facelift and refurbishment, which included the cafeteria area.

In April, University Hospital and Medical Center announced the launch of its neurosurgical program in coordination with the ongoing development of its Spine and Orthopedic Center of Excellence. The addition of this service is strongly supported through the review of the most up-to-date community needs assessment, including use rates.

The hospital’s new neurosurgeon will work in conjunction with the other HCA neurosurgical programs in the area. Several new orthopedic surgeons also joined the medical staff, expanding the variety of specialists available to our community.

The advanced diagnostic technology and support at University Hospital and Medical Center further enhances the ability of the neurosurgeons, orthopedic and spine surgeons to provide outstanding, comprehensive care. Together, the team offers surgical services to treat the spine and brain. They also have the ability to perform the kyphoplasty procedure for patients who suffer from vertebral compression fractures, as well as motion preserving spine procedures including the artificial disc for patients with degenerative disc disease.

In October University completed the refurbishment of the Women’s Diagnostic Center.
