A three-year grant from The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties will expand employer partnerships, job preparation, and placements for members of Mental Health America of the Palm Beaches.

Sept 2, 2026 — Mental Health America of the Palm Beaches (MHAPB) is significantly expanding its workforce development capabilities thanks to a three-year grant from The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties through its Wellness Through Work initiative. With the Community Foundation’s investment, MHAPB will enhance employment support to help individuals living with mental health challenges secure meaningful jobs and achieve long-term economic independence.

Although research consistently demonstrates that employment drives recovery and personal fulfillment, nearly 80% of people receiving public mental health services in the U.S. are unemployed, though about 60% say they want to work.

“Empowering individuals through work isn’t just about economic self-sufficiency, it’s about restoring dignity, purpose, and belonging,” said Andy McAusland, CEO of Mental Health America of the Palm Beaches. “This generous investment from The Community Foundation allows us to expand our reach, partner with local employers, and show our community the incredible strengths our Clubhouse members bring to the workforce.”

New Leadership to Drive Workforce Growth

The Community Foundation grant directly supports a dedicated workforce position to expand job opportunities and member training. MHAPB has hired Alex Cires (MSW, Florida Atlantic University) as Employment Coordinator. Having completed her graduate internship with MHAPB’s Fern Street Clubhouse, Cires brings strong familiarity with members and the Clubhouse model. She will oversee job preparation, build local business partnerships, and manage member placements.

“Work is a vital part of mental health recovery,” said Alex Cires, Employment Coordinator. “I am excited to connect local businesses with motivated members, creating part-time job opportunities that align with their strengths while helping them thrive in the community.”

How the Clubhouse Employment Program Works

Employment is a central pillar of the evidence-based Clubhouse model. Through the Transitional Employment Program, members build skills in part-time placements. Local organizations—including recent partners Merola & Freeman, Attorneys at Law, and the Hanley Center—partner with the Clubhouse to fill essential operational roles.

Key employer benefits include:

  • Streamlined Hiring: Saves time on recruitment and screening.
  • On-the-Job Support: Free, hands-on job coaching provided by Clubhouse staff.
  • Absence Coverage: Guaranteed, no-cost shift coverage by staff if a member is out.

“We invite Palm Beach County employers to join us in helping individuals living with mental illness achieve long-term recovery and independence by finding purpose through meaningful work,” McAusland said.
