A South Florida native has been honored as the American Lung Association’s Volunteer of the Year. Peter S. Berger was presented with the 2026 Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing his exceptional leadership, advocacy and dedication to improving lung health and supporting those affected by lung disease.

Berger, a 25-year Firefighter/Paramedic and Fire Inspector with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, was diagnosed with COPD and later developed cancer linked to occupational exposure while working for another fire service prior to joining Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Since joining the American Lung Association as a Fight for Air Climb participant in 2019, Berger has become one of the organization’s most dedicated and influential volunteers. He has raised more than $160,000 individually and helped generate more than $850,000 in total event revenue. As Chair of the Fight for Air Climb Miami, his leadership has also helped elevate sponsorship support to record levels while expanding community engagement and participation.

In addition to fundraising, Berger plays a vital role in advancing the Lung Association’s mission at the local and national levels. He serves on the COPD National Patient Advisory Council, leads local advocacy initiatives and contributes to national education, media and public policy efforts designed to improve outcomes for individuals living with lung disease.
