Broward Health Coral Springs is proud to announce the successful completion of its first PFO (patent foramen ovale) closure procedure using the GORE® CARDIOFORM Septal Occluder, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s cardiovascular care.
The procedure, performed by Pablo Rengifo-Moreno, M.D., director of the structural heart disease program at Broward Health, further expands access to advanced structural heart therapies across the Broward Health system.
A PFO is a small opening between the heart’s upper chambers that is present at birth and affects about 25% of the general population. Most people with a PFO have no symptoms and do not require treatment, however, in some cases, a PFO can allow a blood clot to travel to the brain and cause a stroke. For carefully selected patients who have experienced a stroke with no other clear cause, this minimally invasive PFO closure can help reduce the risk of future strokes.
