Luis E. Raez, M.D., FASCO, FACP, is medical director and chief scientific officer at Memorial Cancer Institute (MCI) and a hematologist/oncologist who leads its thoracic oncology program, specializing in lung cancers.
Research is central to Dr. Raez’s work, including advancing minimal residual disease (MRD) testing to detect and track cancer through the blood. MCI has studied the technology for years, with findings presented nationally and internationally. Dr. Raez believes MRD could transform how physicians monitor whether cancers are responding to treatment, beyond what can be seen through traditional imaging.
He has also helped bring promising treatments to patients sooner. MCI participated in clinical trials contributing to the approval of more than 12 lung cancer drugs over the past 15 years, giving participating patients access two to three years before FDA approval.
Inspired by his physician father, Dr. Raez pursued medicine to follow his example: “To make a difference in the lives of the patients that we touch.”
