FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.– Broward Health has reached a major milestone in the treatment of carotid artery disease, completing over 100 procedures using the Terumo ROADSAVER™ Carotid Stent System across Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North.

The system uses a small mesh tube to open a narrow carotid artery and improve blood flow to the brain. Its unique design traps plaque against the artery wall during the procedure and helps prevent plaque and debris from breaking loose and traveling to the brain, where it could cause a stroke.

Mehdi Bouslama, M.D., medical director of cerebrovascular care at Broward Health, performed Florida’s first procedure using the advanced stent system at Broward Health Medical Center in January. Since that first procedure, Broward Health has expanded the use of the technology to Broward Health North, and the health system has now reached 100 procedures using the ROADSAVER™ system across both hospitals. The milestone reflects the rapid growth of the program and expands access to this advanced level of care to even more patients across the community.

“Reaching 100 cases with this technology is a testament to what’s possible when physicians, care teams and innovation come together with a shared commitment to putting patients first,” said Dr. Bouslama. “When we introduced this technology in Florida earlier this year, our goal was to give more high-risk patients a safer, more advanced treatment option. Reaching 100 cases is an important step in expanding access to this type of care in our community.”

The ROADSAVER™ system makes the carotid stenting procedure safer, faster and reduces the risk of complications for patients, reinforcing Broward Health’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of patient-centered interventional neurology.
