Eight Longtime community physicians join UHealth, expanding primary care and GI services in North Miami
October 26, 2026 — The University of Miami Health System is expanding access to primary and specialty care in North Miami as eight physicians from Physicians Group of South Florida join UHealth beginning Nov. 2, 2026.
Five primary care physicians will continue seeing patients at the practice’s existing location at 1801 N.E. 123rd St., Suite 405, which will become UHealth North Miami. Three gastroenterologists will transition their practices to UHealth SoLé Mia Medical Center, connecting patients with the comprehensive specialty care and resources available at UHealth’s newest outpatient medical center.
The physicians joining UHealth North Miami are Jane S. Cohen, M.D.; Martin Drost, M.D.; Leilany Irizarry-Colon, M.D.; Danny Abouekde, D.O..; and Jonathan Pomper, M.D.
Gastroenterologists David Cohen, M.D.; Arin Newman, M.D.; and Daniel Wolfson, M.D. will see patients at UHealth SoLé Mia, 2111 SoLé Mia Way, fourth floor, in North Miami.
The practice has deep roots in the community, dating to its founding in Miami Beach in 1967. Its physicians have served patients in the North Miami area for approximately 20 years, including about 15 years at the current location.
“Our patients have trusted us with their care for many years, and that continuity is incredibly important to us,” said Jane S. Cohen, M.D., internal medicine physician at UHealth North Miami. “Becoming part of UHealth allows us to continue caring for the patients and families we know while connecting them to the breadth of specialists, advanced services and resources of an academic health system. It gives our patients greater access to comprehensive care while preserving the relationships they have built with their physicians.”
For existing patients, the transition is designed to provide continuity with the physicians they know while expanding their connection to the broader UHealth system. As UHealth patients, they will have access to MyChart and a more integrated network of primary, specialty and subspecialty care.
The proximity of UHealth North Miami and UHealth SoLé Mia also creates opportunities for greater coordination among primary care physicians, gastroenterologists and other UHealth specialists, helping patients access more of their care close to home.
“UHealth North Miami is an important extension of our commitment to bringing coordinated, world-class care closer to the communities we serve,” said Roy E. Weiss, M.D., Ph.D. “As South Florida’s only university-based academic health system, UHealth brings together leading physicians, research and innovation to deliver the highest quality care our community deserves and needs. Together with UHealth SoLé Mia, we are creating a stronger continuum of care in North Miami, connecting patients with primary care, specialists and the breadth and depth of academic medicine. This is about making it easier for patients to access the expertise, innovation and advanced care available across UHealth, close to where they live and work.”
The addition further strengthens UHealth’s growing presence in North Miami. UHealth SoLé Mia brings a wide range of advanced outpatient services and nationally recognized programs to the community, creating a hub for specialty care that complements the primary care available at UHealth North Miami.
