Surgeons at JFK Medical Center are not only performing the new reverse shoulder replacement surgery with great success, but they are also training other surgeons on the procedure. Since this procedure was approved in 2004, hundreds of surgeries have been performed at JFK. Dr. Howard Routman is the physician champion for the shoulder service. He provides medical leadership in quality control, program development, and patient and family satisfaction.

Dr. Routman has a passion for this procedure and has been instrumental in educating surgeons on this technique throughout The United States and internationally. He has been an invited speaker in Australia, Brazil, France, Japan, China, Spain, Scotland and Italy on shoulder replacement and reverse techniques. Dr. Routman estimates that he has shared his experience with more than 1,000 international surgeons. He also hosts international surgeons monthly at JFK. The International Program at JFK Medical Center’s Orthopedic Institute began three years ago and has trained more than 100 surgeons, coming from Brazil, Denmark, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and beyond.

In March of 2010, The Orthopedic Institute at JFK Medical Center became the first Center for Total Joint Distinction for Total Shoulder Replacement on the East Coast of Florida, a distinction awarded by The Joint Commission. This designation acknowledges the Orthopedic Institute for the program infrastructure, quality and volume of total shoulder replacements.
